Dr. Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar
Professor, Department Head, Occupational Therapy Professor, Disability and Human Development Affiliated Faculty, Department of Psychology |
Dr. Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar is a Professor and Head of the Department of Occupational Therapy at UIC, Professor in the Department of Disability and Human Development and Affiliate faculty in the Department of Psychology. Trained as a community researcher, Dr. Suarez-Balcazar brings over 25+ years of experience conducting community-based participatory research in collaboration with Latino communities and individuals with disabilities. In her research, she studies the design, implementation, and evaluation of obesity prevention and health promotion interventions targeting disadvantaged communities. She also studies empowerment evaluation, evaluation capacity building, and strategies for building the capacity of community organizations and health professionals to provide culturally relevant programming. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Society for Community Research and Action (SCRA) and a Fellow of the Midwestern Psychological Association. She is also a former President of the Society for Community Research and Action and currently a mentor for the Leaders in Equity Evaluation and Diversity (LEEAD) program from the Anne E. Casey Foundation.
